Japan post-earthquake update: Kanazawa & Noto Peninsula

Kanazawa open as usual, Noto remains off-limits

In the aftermath of the recent earthquake, EXO Japan has been closely monitoring the situation on the ground in Japan. The quake, which struck the Ishikawa Prefecture on 1 January, resulted in widespread damage in and around the region.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation, but also grateful to see recovery efforts underway and the outpouring of support from around the world. Several EXO Japan team members have visited the area- for business and personal travel- and all were captivated by the people, culture and scenery.

Echoing our team’s sentiment, Hilary Nisbet, Assistant Product Manager, explains, ‘When I visited Noto Peninsula I was amazed by the natural scenery and the incredible quality of food, but most importantly the wonderful people sharing their culture, artistic talents and their love of Noto. We hope to once again share the beauty of Noto with our guests in the near future.

Read on to learn about news and travel updates in the regions affected by the earthquake.

Kanazawa: Ready to welcome travellers

Despite electrical problems in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, services in Kanazawa and neighbouring Takayama, Gifu, have been fully restored.

All of EXO’s partner hotels, transportation systems and tourist sites are operating as usual with the exception of the 21st Century Museum, which is only partially open at the time of writing.

We can confidently ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to Kanazawa and Takayama.

EXO has a brilliant selection of experiences and activities that highlight the unique culture and beautiful nature of the region. Working with local communities and suppliers, EXO’s products also generate much needed income to support the recovery efforts of the people and the tourism industry.

Noto Peninsula: Travel advisory

Sadly, the Noto Peninsula suffered extreme infrastructure failure in the recent earthquake. Due to the extent of damage and the difficulty of repair work, we will be re-routing guests away from this area through the end of June 2024.

Prior to the quake, EXO was working on new product development in the Noto Peninsula, highlighting local experiences such as lacquerware workshops, temple visits and activities involving the community.

We are looking forward to the day when we can resume operations to Noto so that we can not only share these special experiences with our guests, but also support the local economy.

The safety and security of our guests is EXO’s top priority. After assessing the situation on the ground, we are confident that travellers can safely enjoy Kanazawa and neighbouring Takayama.  We continue to closely monitor the situation in Noto Peninsula and will provide updates when we feel we can safely resume tourism to the area.
